Semrush and Ahrefs are the two names you'll hear most in SEO. Both are excellent, both are priced for serious users, and both will show you far more than Google Search Console. The right choice depends on the job you need doing most.

The quick answer

Choose Semrush if you want one toolkit for keyword research, audits, rank tracking, competitor traffic and AI search visibility. It's my best overall SEO pick, scored 8.4/10.

Choose Ahrefs if link building and content research are your priority. It's my pick for backlinks. I haven't finished scoring it yet, so it shows as "Soon" in my tables.

Side by side

  • Best for: Semrush, businesses serious about Google and AI search. Ahrefs, link building and content research.

  • Price: Semrush from $139/mo with a 7-day free trial. Ahrefs has paid plans only, plus free Webmaster Tools for your own site.

  • My score: Semrush 8.4/10. Ahrefs, scoring soon.

Where Semrush wins

Breadth. Keyword data, competitor traffic sources, site audits and AI search visibility sit in one dashboard. For a small business that wants one subscription to cover SEO, that's hard to beat.

Where Ahrefs wins

Backlinks and content research. If you're actively building links or planning content around what already performs in your niche, Ahrefs is built for that job. Its free Webmaster Tools are also worth setting up for your own site, whichever paid tool you choose.

Before paying for either, connect Google Search Console. It's free, it's Google's own data, and it tells you what a paid tool needs to add.

Do you need either yet?

Not always. If you're publishing content every month, running more than one site or losing customers to a competitor who ranks above you, a paid tool earns its keep. If not, start free and upgrade when you hit a real limit.
